Antique Lignum Vitae Wood Bead Horse Ankle Rattlers with a total of 26 beads.
A rare antique pair of wooden ankle rattlers for training Tennessee walking horses on original leather straps.
Each wooden bead is made of Lignum Vitae which is a hard and heavy wood. They would have been placed on the front ankles of the horse.
My grandfather owned a saddlery business (Schutz Brothers) and had given me a strand of these wooden beads. This is the first time that I have seen them on their original straps.
Each rattler has 13 beads that get larger towards the middle. The smallest beads are approximately 1” across and the largest beads are approximately 1 3/4” across.
Most beads are in very good condition. The last two photos show the two beads that have some missing bits of wood. Probably where a horse hoof haas hit it.
