ANTIQUE “LETTUCE AND TOMATO” LUNCHEON/SALAD SET(
ENGLAND
)
This set of china was a wedding gift to my parents after WWII.
They both lived in
England
before moving to
America
and brought this set with them.
It is almost a whimsical – and great fun to bring out for guests – set that has been used for luncheons and salads.
It consists of 12 basic, matching pieces all in a pattern to make them look like lettuce (some have called them cabbage) leaves with tomato highlights.
Some pieces may have some slight crazing, but I will only note any chips that I find. I cannot see any cracks or stains on any of the pieces.
The pieces that have a maker’s stamp say “MIDWINTER PORCELON BURSLEM
ENGLAND
” all in a circle with a crown above it (see photo).
(My mother was from the Burslem area in Staffordshire.)
1.
LARGE SERVING BOWL:
Measures about
9”
long,
8”
wide at its widest part and about 2 ½” tall.
It has the Midwinter mark on the bottom.
There is a very small chip (about ¼”) on a top edge and an even smaller chip which is barely noticeable on the underside of the edge.
2.
6 INDIVIDUAL PLATES/BOWL:
Measure about 5 ½” x 4 ½” and have a slight bowling effect to give them a height of about
1”
. All have the Midwinter mark on the bottom.
Can only find two barely noticeable chips, one on each of two dishes.
They are very small and on the underside of the edges so not noticeable from above.
3.
TRAY WITH SALT AND PEPPER SHAKERS AND A SMALL CONDIMANT JAR:
The tray measures about 5 ½” x 4 ¼” and has circular recesses for the three items. The bottom is only marked “
ENGLAND
”.
The salt and pepper shakers measure about 1 ½” in diameter and about 2 ½” tall. Only one shaker is marked “MADE IN ENGLAND”.
Unfortunately, these shakers have no stoppers.
The small condiment jar has a slot for a spoon but no spoon. It is not marked on the bottom. There is a very small (about ¼”) chip on the lip that can be seen from the top.
4.
CHEESE OR BUTTER SERVER/SAVER:
Consists of two parts.
A tray on the bottom and a wedge shaped top.
The bottom tray measures about
7”
x
6”
and has 5 holes to help air circulation for the contents. It has a recessed area to hold the lid in place. It is not marked on the bottom.
The lid is about
4”
tall if one adds the tomato on the top that acts as a lifting knob. Under the lid is stamped “MADE IN
ENGLAND
” and has one airing hole in it. The tray has no chips but there are several very, very small chips along the bottom edge of the lid.
Not really noticeable unless one runs their finger along it and cannot be seen unless tipped over.
I try to describe my items fairly and honestly to the best of my ability but please keep in mind that I am not an expert.
Please feel free to email me should you have any questions at all about them
If you win more than one item I have up for auction this week, if possible, I will gladly package them together and save you shipping costs.
However, because of the number of items in this lot and how breakable they could be, careful consideration would have to be made for any items I can pack with them.
I
ship (to US only, please)
usually within 1 business day
after confirmation of payment. Payment should be made within 2 days of auction’s end unless arrangements have been made between buyer and seller.
