    Description

    This is an
ORIGINAL HAMMOND MULTIPLEX Portable Typewriter in its own Wooden Case.
The typewriter and case appear to be in very good condition given their age. P
lease carefully review the photos as they will show the condition better than about anything else will. Please don't hesitate to ask me any questions about this machine
    BEFORE
you commit to buying it. I want you to be thoroughly satisfied with your purchase!  it is a rare
example of an earlier typewriter style that never continued beyond the early 1900s.
    The
    Hammond Multiplex typewriter
    was manufactured by the
Hammond Typewriter Company of New York
. The typewriter uses a type-shuttle and hammer typing mechanism. The type shuttle is a curved piece of rubber/metal that rotates when the key is pressed to bring up the correct character. The printing is done by a hammer in the back of the machine striking the type-shuttle in the front of the machine, with the paper and ink ribbon in between to receive the impression. The typewriter is called a Multiplex because the typewriter contains two type shuttles in its central “turret” that can easily be rotated into use, allowing the typing of two complete alphabets in different typesets on each machine. This typewriter has italic and PICA fonts.
    This is a
    collector's item
and is not suitable for daily writing. The rotating type-shuttle has two fonts - PICA and Italics. The keys appear to be jammed.
    This typewriter comes with the
original wooden base and cover in very good condition
. Locks are on opposite sides of the case.
The typewriter has some missing parts I believe, but I am NOT an expert in vintage typewriters so you be the judge. The ribbon is missing. This antique typewriter is a
    collector's item
    and
is not intended for daily typing
. It has the round brass plate mounted on the left side of the base that says "
for all nations and all tongues
" - Patented but without a patent number.
