Description
First made by Westmoreland in the 1920s, the milk glass lines (a pure white, opaque glass named for its semblance to a glass of milk) were the most remarkable and prolific product this company manufactured. In fact, Westmoreland was one of the top producers of fine quality milk glass in the United States, according to theCollector's Encyclopedia of Milk Glass
by Betty and Bill Newbound. Their popular items include the perennial favorite hen-on-nest
covered dishes
(of which we currently have several for purchase in the store,) that were first made of more delicate milk glass in comparison to the examples produced from the 1940s on. This pair of candle holders is from one of the most popular and well known patterns that Westmoreland produced, Paneled Grape.
Apparently, Paneled Grape was first made at the turn of the last century by another glass maker, but what most collectors find on the secondary market today is the later glass (1940s - 1950s) which is thicker and whiter in comparison to early milk glassware, by Westmoreland.
